Phentermine History

Phentermine is a commonly prescribed drug to treat obesity in those whose weight may propose health risks. It has been approved in the United States to be prescribed as an appetite suppressant more recently since 2012.

There is still much current research going on with this drug. Before 2012, however, phentermine has had somewhat of a rocky past while more research was being conducted. It was originally approved in the United States by the Food and Drug Administration in 1959 and was put on the market for use in the early 1970s as phentermine hydrochloride. However, in 1998, this effective weight loss drug was removed from the market in America. It has, however, made quite a comeback in recent years and is a widely prescribed drug to help suppress appetite. More research is currently being conducted to determine what other drugs best interact with phentermine. There are questions of side effects, which make it difficult for some people to use. There are also questions of how to make this drug even more effective. Can it be used in smaller doses when used in conjunction with other drugs? Are there other drugs that can help to ease the side effects that some users experience? These are just some of the questions that current research is hoping to answer and results look promising for many. As effective as this drug is, there is a strong need in this nation to help those who are suffering with obesity and whose overall health is at risk due to that obesity.

Phentermine is a brand name prescription drug that is manufactured and distributed by Medeva Pharmaceuticals. However, there are a number of generic brands of phentermine. Generic often costs less while being equally as effective. Your doctor can help you to decide which manufacturer and distributor is right for you. Even if you are planning on buying a form of phentermine that is approved to be sold without a prescription, it is never a bad idea to consult with your physician regarding any changes in dietary supplements, diet, and exercise. It is always recommended when taking phentermine to be consuming a healthy and well balanced diet. It is also very important to be engaging in regular exercise, especially aerobic. In 1997, phentermine was marketed as a combination drug with fenfluramine, also known as fen-phen. After many patients experienced heart valve disease as well as other abnormal heart valve conditions, fenfluramine was taken off the market. This does not meant that phentermine was the cause of these conditions, though. As stated above, the FDA re-approved phentermine in 2012 after realizing that it was the fenfluramine causing the heart valve issues in many patients. Phentermine is sold alone in many countries today, including in the United States.

There are many studies currently going on with phentermine as a combination drug, but not as fen-phen. One of the drugs of interest for manufacturing with phentermine is topiramate to try to increase weight loss results in users. As with any controlled substance, phentermine itself can only be obtained through a prescription from a doctor. If you are suffering with obesity, you may want to talk to your doctor about your options for weight loss, including phentermine.
