Ionamin is a brand name form of the weight loss drug, Phentermine Hydrochloride. Phentermine Hydrochloride works as an appetites suppressant and is only available by prescription. It is usually prescribed to individuals who are considered obese, as obesity can be very detrimental to overall health and can lead to a variety of dangerous comorbid conditions in the body. These can include (but are not limited to) diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and it can even lead to an early death. Let’s discuss Ionamin in a bit more detail as well as the new supplement that has been released with the same name from Hi Tech Pharmaceuticals.
What is the Drug, Ionamin?
Ionamin is one brand name form of Phentermine and is, like other forms of Phentermine, prescribed alongside lifestyle changes such as reduced caloric intake and increased physical activity. It does come in various doses. Some common ones are 30 mg and 15 mg. Some people have difficulty with one large, single dose of Phentermine in the morning, so several companies have begun to manufacture this drug in smaller doses that can be taken more than once throughout the day. This helps to reduce the severity of some of the side effects and even helps to keep appetite suppressed later in the day.
It comes in yellow and grey capsules in either the 15 mg or 30 mg dose. Each capsule is clearly labeled with its dose. Just like any other medication that contains Phentermine Hydrochloride, you will need to eat less and work out more while taking this drug if you want to be successful in your weight loss. It is recommended for individuals who have a BMI of more than 30 or in some cases 27 if there are other health factors at risk. This can include those who have diabetes, heart disease, etc. The Phentermine stimulates the neurotransmitter, norepinephrine, in the hypothalamus. This region of the brain helps to regulate hunger, and this drug “tells” our brain that we feel more full and satisfied than we actually may be.
Ionamine is not to be taken for longer than several weeks, needing a break in between treatments. This is due to the severe side effects as well as the fact that this drug can cause dependency. For this reason, your doctor may also start you with a smaller dose and work you up to the 30 mg form. They may also similarly taper of your dosage near the end of each treatment. This can help to reduce possible withdrawal symptoms.
While there are many side effects that come along with this medication, some are more serious than others. You should stop taking Ionamin and call your doctor immediately (or visit the ER or an urgent care center if after hours) if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Shortness of breath, especially when it is unusually present during exercise
- Chest pain, fainting, or feeling dizzy
- Swelling in your ankles, feet, or lower legs
- Abnormal or significantly increased heart rate
- Changes in mood or mental state such as confusion, irritability, extreme euphoria, or any abnormal thoughts and/or behavior
